I will attempt to explain my thoughts on using folders within the Newmanation libraries. One suggestion is that the files might be organized by person. So, when you go to a library, it might look something like the attached picture (you can click on the picture to make it bigger).
As you can see in this simple example above, we have the Parley Newman folder, with each of the 7 children having their own subfolder within. I have opened the Mark Newman folder, and you can see a few of the contents. It looks pretty easy until we consider some questions:
1. Note that the personal history is mixed in with the pictures. If we move to folders, is that how we would do it? Just have one library with everything in it? Or would the Mark Newman folder have its own Document, Picture, Audio, and Video subfolders? Or would we keep the libraries and have a duplicate folder structure for each?
2. This structure works well for children beneath parents, but what about spouses? Would there be a separate folder for Jeanette Wilkinson Newman? Or for Shellie Lamont Newman? How would the spouse folder be attached? Perhaps the name of the folder could be Parley and Jeanette Newman. But that could be problematic for those of us who have had multiple spouses.
3. What would we do with documents or pictures that include multiple people?
In all of this, I don’t mean to say that folders are not a good idea. I am just saying that I’m not sure the best way to make them work. As time goes on and Newmanation begins to be used by our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, the current library structure may become less easy to navigate. If you have an idea of how this might work, a mockup (even if hand-drawn) might be very useful in helping me understand your idea.
This is a very good explanation, Mark. It helped me understand both the advantages of folders and the challenges. I’ll give the question more thought, but I’m not sure I will be among those who can be especially helpful.
